Into the shadows…

I’m joining the underhive! A bit late… but eh…

So I have a kill team ready to go – I’ll just poach some Iron Warriors and ta-dah! kill team.  I’ll even have nasty specialists ready to rock and roll.

And… and…

I’m going to try and collect an inquisition kill team.  We shall purge the underhive of scum and villainy! This is probably a good way of scratching my sisters of battle/imperial agents/inquisition* itch without breaking the bank. Especially seeing as there are a load of vostroyans kicking around who make a great core to either an inquisition or astra millitarum kill team.

In fact, I reckon they’re 100% good to go as a astra millitarum guard kill team

For the inquistion kill team I’ll add this model:

Due props for image: goo.gl/lCk8ol

That is one ordo hereticus inquisitor.  Now the rules only allow for ordo xenos inquisitors, which is annoying for two reasons: 1) ordo hereticus inquisitors look cooler and 2) ordo xenos inquisitors can’t take hand flamers 😦

So I’m reckoning clipping off the brazier and add something to make a needle pistol.  Or maybe a plasma pistol? I’m not sure which one is better.  Going to the local GW store to find out.  (update – still going to store but decided that plasma pistols are probably better)

Also…. A name, shall we say…. Inquisitor Baltasar Kaulder… yyess… this is a good name.**

So the fluff for this combination.

These vostroyans were ‘acquired’ during  Inquisitor Kaulder’s actions against the Orks on Danik’s World.  Although the fighting continues, the inquisitor now has more pressing matters to attend, but these men have remained the inquisitor’s …muscle… on further investigations.  There’s even rumour that their leader, Captain Zhaebin, is being groomed to be Kaulder’s next interrogator, after the previous one died in a terrible ‘accident’.

Right, that’s all I have for you guys and gals now, I’ve got to run and get some converting done XD

Zooooooommmm!!!

I finally painted five raptors.  This may seem sensationalist, but I got these raptors for Christmas (at the same time as my terminators in fact) so finally getting round to finishing them is a big deal.

Here they are in all their glory:

Finally done

Well… not all of them.  I accidentally kitbashed 12 of them, so I’m less than halfway through them. How did I get to this place?

Anyway, lets take a closer look at these models:

Sergeant [name]

The main thing is the lightning claw effect.  I tried to do some quasi blending with thraka green wash.  I simply painted the claws white and then layered over the wash, just covering less and less.  At tabletop distance they look pretty good, but up close they look blotchy and a bit ‘off’.  A good first attempt methinks.

Yes, he doesn’t have a name (yet)… I will accept suggestions in the comments below.  I may ignore them…

…I’ll probably ignore them.  But you peeps have fun anyway.

Special weapons

Flying special weapons bod:

Walking special weapons bod:

The ‘normals’

(I’m just going to lump them all together)

Again there’s one flying and walking, flying form the raptor kit and walking from the assault marine kit.  Nothing too special going on here,

I’ve also been working on some other things, including this vindicator conversion:

Scrubbing this Helbrute:

I’m slightly disappointed that I didn’t get many pictures of the conversion in action.  It’s my first conversion that isn’t kitbashing.  As in, there was cutting involved

The origin of it is 1) the new traitor legions book, which incentivises ordnance weapons and 2) I had a rhino lying around.

The first thing I did was try to find the sprues that are sold with the vindicator set.  But these are impossible to find.  So the next thing was the big momma cannon, but that was just ridiculous in size and price.  Expensive to the point where I may as well have bought another vindicator.

From somewhere came the idea to use the defiler cannon.  Really I have no idea where it came from just suddenly I thought ‘I wonder if that would fit’.  And lo, it did; and I saw that it was good.

The basic steps are here: Cut a rectangle out of the top right corner of the rhino front panel.  Then slip the defiler cannon in the gap, gluing the top of the cannon mounting to the front of the top part.  Next, up-armour the front by gluing the plates and the window armour on the left hand side and placing the cowling from the defiler kit around the cannon (this nicely covers any rough edges from the cutting).

Then I chaosified the rest in the normal way 😉

And I’m starting to experiment with basing…

I’m going for salt flats a la Star Wars 8

Here’s where we’re at so far

The front half is based red and the other Ulthuan Grey.  Then I put Agrellan Earth over it, using different thicknesses to see how the cracking works.   I quite like the deep cracking over redThen Ulthuan Grey over the top of it all.  I quite like the deep cracking over red, but I’m not quite sure where to go with it – maybe some ceramite white layered over, maybe use more texture paint?

Anyway, I’m off to watch an 8th edition battle report and deliver my musings on how my iron warriors are going to fare.

See ya!

Some lessons from a game

I had a game what must be a few weeks ago now and now I have finally written up some points I learnt from it. (I was playing Iron Warriors vs Smurfs, using the traitor legions supplement).

So onto the 5 points 🙂

1. Obliterator as troops are epic

They are just AMAZING!

Like, any Iron Warriors army should really consider taking CAD instead of the Grand Company formation.  Deep striking, tank hunter, objective secured, 2 wounds, 2+/5++, 6+ FNP, fear, slow and purposeful… What’s not like? These possibly won me the game – deep-striked into my opponent’s back line and cleared out an objective and then stole it from under him.  And then refused to die.  1 point for objective and one for 1 point for linebreaker.  Bish Bash Bosh

Men of the match

2. Havocs are solid

They did really nicely secured my flanks, my opponent couldn’t do his cheeky land speeder flank attack as he didn’t want run through my right flank missile launchers.  The left autocannons popped a transport in their first salvo and then played tennis with a devastator combat squad.  The tank hunter makes them pretty good at that kind of thing.  If you’re going for a CAD, obliterators might be better though, that way your back line objectives are secure.  However, in a chaos warband you can’t take the ob sec oblits but you can take havocs, so worth bearing in mind…

3. Use daemonforge early

Yeah, defilers are good, but they’re not any use if they’ve been tarpitted by scouts 😦 should have used daemonforge early and then objective would have been clear and i could have rampaged across his left… oh well.

4. Warpsmiths are not alpha males

They do not do well in close combat.  That said, it was warpsmith in a unit of bog standard CSMs (avec c&c weapons) versus a kitted out command squad with librarian. It. Was. Not. Pretty

But the squad was avenged by… the havocs.  The autocannons never fail XD They riddled the command squad with heavy fire and broke them.  The fall back stopped them getting line breaker. Woop Woop!

See ya soon

The first Warpsmith!

Well, I think I’ve finished the first model for our little game.  The HQ.

I present…

Master of The Forge Volga Mir-Ghazi.  I picture him as a sullen and unrelenting master.  He drives the great forges to produce the physical material of war: bombs, bolts, shells, tanks, armour, blades, and the like.

He’s painted in basically the same as all my normal dudes – spray, do metallics and black, wash, hazard stripes and details.  Now I am particularly pleased with him because of the scanners/sensors/lenses around his head.

The first time I’ve successfully used a Duncan (may His coats be thin) technique that worked

So they were done by painting the lens white and then applying a shade of the required colour (green, blue and red, respectively).  This dude is one of my favourite models so far XD

I also added some (more) dakka to my force.  Namely four autocannons:

Shout out to Stu at Southampton Sluggaz for setting me up with the converted autocannons; all I did was glue the dudes together

This addition brings my infantry based shooting to: two obliterators, four missile launchers, and four autocannons.

AND….. after all that kitbashing, I found another three models worth of bits to make some extra peeps to bolster my special weapons/sergeants.  I’m feeling the plasma pistol will be a great sergeant for my havocs.

That’s all for now – have a good one!

750 points of Pain!

So, you lovely readers may be unaware of this, but Harry and I have organised a small introductory battle – his pox versus my iron.  Now I have been flipping through my models and the new traitor legions books and have decided on an appropriate force to face his shambling hordes.

I am going for a standard CAD led by a warpsmith; this one in fact:

He’s very menacing, I like him 🙂

I thinking a defiler, two obliterators, two 6 or 7 man marine units, and a rhino or two.  That should be a enough dakka and/or choppa to deal with Harry’s bloated pox bearers.

Also, I’m on the hunt for a cheap vindicator – that fist of the gods formation isn’t going to blow things up on its own XD

Iron Within!

</Oli>

I need your clothes….

…your boots, and your motorcycle

That’s right, I’ve been working on some terminators for my grand company.  And they’re not doing too bad – nearly halfway through my terminator annihilation force in a blur of action that has not matched my previous apathetic mood.

This apathy was brought on by one particular model…

…and my inability to recess shade my vindicator 😭. Especially when Duncan makes it look so easy 😕.

However – I clearly got my mojo back XD

Quick question anyone know how to wash a smooth surface well? Would really help me finish this Deathwing shoulder pad

And how do you get the shade good on a smooth surface
Is the stripe meant to be green?

(also – is that about the correct colour scheme?)

Well, the train is about to pull in so I will lose my wifi

Happy war games!

Update on the walking rot

Well my army creation has ground to a near standstill only because of the dreaded four letter word… Work.
I have been working for asda as a delivery driver which takes up time as well as being tasked with doing all the sound for a feature length film.

The movie

I can’t lie I’m very grateful for being allowed to work on it, but it is a lot of work yet it is ready fun.

Paint needed 750pts only on the shelf

The army is out and just in need of a lick of paint!
